Engrish

Why does Engrish have such a fascination for us native speakers? Personally I find it a huge source of amusement that in Japan - a nation ostensibly obsessed with learning English - that there's so much "English" visible which is not only wrong, but often hilariously so.

This isn't poking fun at other people's speaking abilities - no doubt I make enough howlers in other languages myself - but at the sheer flood of weird words which wash over you in Japan.

(For a view of the world of linguistic cockups from the other side of the divide, see the Orientalish section)

More Japanese Pink Pigs

Talking of pink pigs I came across this fellow tacked on to the wall by the entrance of a building near Yoyogi. ("Buta" is Japanese for pig).

Happy Buta

All that glitzers...

Glitzy Chest? Another one of Mr. Austy Wind's enterprises? Possibly involving glam rock and / or sparkling mammary regions? The mind is free to boggle.

Not Spam, Spam and More Spam: Pasta Viking

It is a little known fact that the first Europeans to reach Japan were not as commonly thought Portuguese, but rather Italo-Scandinavians whose longboat was blown off course during a freak surfing incident near Hawaii. Upon their fortuitous landfall at Kanagawa they courteously refrained from looting, pillaging and ravaging, instead engaging in a gourmet competition with the local samurai.

It's an austy wind...

I am not exactly sure who Mr. Austy Winds is, but I sincerely believe his wedding-dress floor show is perfectly innocent - not to mention sweet and classical - and the kind of event your Japanese bride-to-be would take you and your putative mother-in-law to.

A Disgusting Profession

I always thought dentistry was a profession with a slightly revolting side to it. This dental establishment discovered in some back street off Shibuya's Center-Gai obviously thinks so too.

Really Gross Dental Labor
