Tokyo

Tokyo (東京, Tokyo - lit. "Eastern Capital") is Japan's capital city and the centre of Japan's economic, political and social life. Though it has a reputations for being a crowded, expensive place it is much more pleasant to live in or visit than you might imagine.

Tokyo - the Basics

Tokyo is located on the island of Honshu where it bends to the north roughly two-thirds of the way between the island's western and eastern ends. Although a coastal city, it is situated at the head of Tokyo Bay, sheltered from the Pacific by the Boso Peninsula to the east and the Miura Peninsula to the southwest. It lies at the focal point of the Kanto Plain, by far the largest reasonably flat area on Honshu.

Tokyo is divided into two parts - the 23 "wards" (cities, districts or boroughs) which make up the core city, and a long "tail" of smaller towns to the west, reaching all the way up into the mountains. The core city's population is around 12 million (and still increasing slightly), but it merges imperceptibly with the surrounding cities and towns (including Yokohama, Kawasaki and Chiba) to form a conurbation of roughty 30 million inhabitants.

Touring Tokyo

If you've never been here before, this is going to come as a bit of a letdown: Tokyo is neither the high-tech city-of-the-future nor an exotic, temple-filled mystic urban space brimming with Zen and geisha. In fact large parts of it are, to put it plainly, a bit of a dump (bet you won't find any other capital city of a major industrial power where many of its residents still live in structures that would pass as enlarged garden sheds in other contexts). Nevertheless there's plenty to see and do in and around Tokyo, and your neural exoticness receptors will be kept plenty busy. Check out the Tokyo Guide for more.

Living in Tokyo

Life in Tokyo is not exactly a walk in the park (a long walk to the park, maybe) but if you know what you're looking for, the city has plenty to offer residents. (If you don't know what you're looking for, look forward to living in a shack by a railway line). Living in Tokyo might contain some clues to keep you sane.

Odd Tokyo

There is no shortage of strange, weird and / or bizarre stuff going on in Tokyo - pick a random expat blog and you'll be sure to find mention or a picture of something someone finds a little bid odd. Visit Odd Tokyo to get your fill of outlandish fantasy costumes, salarymen sleeping on trains, and somehow amusing Engrish.
