Mount Fuji erupts!!!

We've always been told that Mount Fuji is a very dormant volcano which hasn't erupted for several hundred years, but it looks like the potential threat to the Japanese capital city through catastrophic pyroclastic activity is being seriously underplayed so as not to undermine confidence in the financial markets or create panic in the general population. So it's no surprise that the news media have been suspiciously silent on this latest explosion of magma from the summit of the country's highest and most famous mountain.

I snapped this image from my window earlier this evening:

Mt. Fuji - not a dormant volcano?

and if that's not enough to get you seriously worried check out the series of images below:

Mount Fuji erupting

Now night has fallen, activity has died down as far as I can tell, but I'm just packing my things and will be heading north at daybreak, keeping well ahead of the streams of molten lava which will shortly be flowing across the Kanto Plain.
